Yiddish in the City Internships: Ontario Jewish Archives

Dear Yiddish Students, The iPRAKTIKUM team is pleased to announce yet another great opportunity with “Yiddish in the City”, this time with the Ontario Jewish Archives. The program identifies needs in the broader Toronto community which can be fulfilled by a University of Toronto Yiddish student. This will be an opportunity to gain professional credentials as well as connect to the local Jewish community. Your internship experience can be accredited in the form of a Co-Curricular Record (CCR) that will appear on your U of T transcript. The Ontario Jewish Archives – OJA – is the largest repository of Jewish life in Canada. Founded in 1973, the OJA acquires, preserves and makes accessible the records that chronicle Ontario’s Jewish history. A significant portion of the OJA’s collection is in Yiddish, the language of the majority of Jewish immigrants who settled in Ontario in the early to mid-twentieth century. Students will gain valuable field experience with hands-on archival work, including describing, and translating records, and producing digital content (such as blog and social media posts) highlighting Yiddish records in the collection. Dear Yiddish Students, The iPRAKTIKUM team is pleased to announce yet another great opportunity with “Yiddish in the City”, this time with the Bialik Hebrew Day School. The program identifies needs in the broader Toronto community which can be fulfilled by a University of Toronto Yiddish student. This will be an opportunity to gain professional credentials as well as connect to the local Jewish community. Your internship experience can be accredited in the form of a Co-Curricular Record (CCR) that will appear on your U of T transcript. This is a paid opportunity that will take place in person. Bialik Hebrew Day School Bialik is the only school in Toronto which provides secular Yiddish instruction. As an intern, you will be observing and assisting the Yiddish teacher. Tasks can include: co-teaching, tutoring, mentoring, developing learning materials. The Bialik Yiddish curriculum is currently in its forth year of redevelopment, along the strands of culture, history, music and literature, with an emphasis on local community history. Read More »

The ‘German in the City’ program is designed to provide you with an opportunity to use your German skills in a work environment, make professional contacts in the teaching field, and contribute to the broader GTA community. Your internship experience can be accredited in the form of a Co-Curricular Record (CCR) that will appear on your U of T transcript. This time, the placement will be with our partner Agronauten: Have you ever wondered how and what you eat impacts the environment? Or how that potato made its way to your plate? Would you like to contribute to a greener future by learning about local food systems or getting hands-on experiences “in the field”? If this applies to you then you might be the person we are looking for… Agronauten is a non-profit association that researches and communicates many aspects related to food and farming culture – especially regional, organic agriculture and food systems that are viable for the future. They work on topics like partnership models of producers and consumers, access to land for agroecological farmers, self-empowered technological solutions for farmers, regional logistics, integration of refugees through agriculture, indicators of farm sustainability and change of food and farming culture. These are paid placements that may include co-teaching, job shadowing, one-on-one tutoring, mentoring, and the development of learning materials and special projects. You may also interact with graduate student mentors on and off site. Teaching assignments and tasks will be assigned in consultation with our lead teachers on site. Every effort will be made to accommodate your course schedule and other commitments at the U of T.
