Professor Emeritus Horst Wittmann: May 17, 1935 – July 13, 2018

Professor Wittmann was born in Germany and educated at the University of Göttingen in German and American literature and in the history of art. He earned his PhD at the University of Massachusetts in 1968 with a dissertation entitled Hofmannsthals Lustspielsprache: Die Sprachkrise und ihre Überwindung in den Komödien “Der Schwierige”, “Der Rosenkavalier” und “Ariadne auf Naxos”; his research focused generally on Austrian and German modernism.

In 1969 he became professor of German literature at the University of Toronto, and for the last five years before his retirement (in 1996), he served as director of the Co-op Programs at UTSC.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Horizons of Friendship or Parkinson Society Canada.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
