The reading group Ekphrasis: Text – Image Denkräume in conjunction with the Department of Germanic Languages & Literatures is happy to announce the following lecture by Prof. John Zilcosky (University of Toronto). John Zilcosky will join the reading group on Thursday, November 12th, 2020 from 4-6pm to discuss the appearance of ekphrasis in texts of Rainer Maria Rilke, Franz Kafka, and Sigmund Freud.
At this meeting of the reading group we will focus on the following sections of the texts and the topics indicated:
- Rilke’s “Archaic Torso of Apollo” (from New Poems, 1907/08) – we will use an English translation but refer back to the German original.
- Ekphrasis in Kafka’s The Metamorphosis (1912), in the context of the battle of the media.
- Kafka’s Moses and Freud’s Moses (chapters six and seven of Kafka’s The Trial [1914/15], Freud’s “The Moses of Michelangelo [1914]).
The guest lecture will take place on Zoom. If you would like to participate, please send an email to andre.flicker@mail.utoronto.ca
