Bring your German skills into practice and explore the world of language learning from a teaching perspective!

The iPRAKTIKUM team is excited to announce the Multilingual German Lab (MGL) internship, designed to support U of T’s first-year German language courses through weekly tutorial sessions. With the guidance of the graduate teaching assistant and the undergraduate iPRAKTIKUM MGL intern, students will not only have the opportunity to work on their conversational and written language skills but also have the chance to discover learning strategies that will help them adjust to the student-centered, active learning approach in our German language courses. The Multilingual German Lab will include thematically organized, game-based, interactive activities to create an engaging and social learning environment.

The iPRAKTIKUM – MGL program is designed to provide the undergraduate student intern with the opportunity to apply their German skills in a professional setting, build teaching-related experience, expand their professional network, and contribute to the University of Toronto German Studies community.

The undergraduate iPRAKTIKUM intern will play a supporting role in the MGL program. The weekly MGL tutorials will primarily be led by a graduate teaching assistant in German studies with extensive German teaching experience. The graduate teaching assistant will also provide mentorship, training, feedback, and guidance to the undergraduate iPRAKTIKUM – MGL intern.

Main duties of the iPRAKTIKUM – MGL intern:

  • job-shadowing the graduate teaching assistant for professional development
  • supporting the development of learning materials for GER100Y and GER200Y students
  • supporting the development of activities for the practice of conversational German
  • assisting with co-teaching during lab sessions
  • collaborating to create a welcoming and interactive learning environment
  • reporting to the GER100Y coordinator and Undergraduate Chair

Lab meetings:

  • weekly two 1-hour meetings either in-person or online

The delivery method for this lab will be in-person and online synchronous.

Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications include advanced knowledge of German, native fluency in a third language, preferably Mandarin Chinese, in accord with the needs of the program, and familiarity of theories and practices of Second Language Acquisition (SLA). Preference will be given to candidates who are familiar with the German language courses in the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures. Proven excellent communication and collaboration skills. 

Hours of Work: 24 hours (approximately)

Estimated course enrolment: 30 students

Hourly Rate: $ 22.56

Eligibility:

  • Open to U of T undergraduates who are enrolled in or have completed German course
  • Completion of GER 300 or comparable German skills strongly preferred
