The iPRAKTIKUM team is excited to announce the Multilingual German Lab (MGL) internship in Winter 2026. In the upcoming term, the MGL intern position will be classified as a Unit 1 Teaching Assistant role.

About MGL

The Multilingual German Lab (MGL) will supplement our first-year German language courses through weekly lab (tutorial) session aimed to support both domestic and international students. With the guidance of the iPRAKTIKUM MGL intern, students will not only have the opportunity to work on their conversational and written language skills but also have the chance to discover learning strategies that will help them adjust to the student-centered, active learning approach in our German language courses. The Multilingual German Lab will include thematically organized, game-based, interactive activities to create an engaging and social learning environment.

About the Position

The iPRAKTIKUM – MGL program is designed to provide the undergraduate student intern with the opportunity to apply their German skills in a professional setting, build teaching-related experience, expand their professional network, and contribute to the University of Toronto German Studies community.

The MGL intern will be supervised and supported by the Language Coordinator of GER100Y Introduction to German, particularly in planning tutorial sessions and preparing learning content aligned with the current GER100Y curriculum. The intern will lead weekly MGL tutorials and will also be responsible for promoting the MGL program to students in GER100Y (and GER200Y).

Job Duties

  • Attending meetings with GER100Y instructors to stay updated on teaching progress, teaching focus, and students’ main learning challenges, in order to create aligned teaching and learning materials for the weekly tutorials
  • Communicating with the GER100Y Language Coordinator and course instructors for feedback, guidance, and tutorial suggestions
  • Develop learning materials for GER100Y students
  • Developing activities for the practice of conversational German
  • Manage the MGL Quercus page, including uploading materials, sending announcements, and responding to student inquiries
  • Leading weekly one-hour tutorial sessions
  • Promoting MGL tutorials to registered GER100Y students through various channels, including (but not limited to) giving short presentations in GER100Y classes, attending Kaffeestunde to introduce MGL, creating promotional, and coordinating outreach with, for example, the German Studies Students’ Union and the Department’s Communications Officer.
  • Creating a welcoming and interactive learning environment
  • Reporting to the GER100Y coordinator and Undergraduate Chair

Qualification

Minimum qualifications include advanced knowledge of German, native fluency in a third language, preferably Mandarin Chinese, in accord with the needs of the program, and familiarity of theories and practices of Second Language Acquisition (SLA). Preference will be given to candidates who are familiar with the German language courses in the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures. Proven excellent communication and collaboration skills.
