Ph.D. Candidate Contact veronika.rummel@mail.utoronto.ca Background In the course of an academic exchange program, I received an M.A. in English Literature from Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky in 2007. I then completed my M.A. in teaching English and Physical Education with a minor in teaching German as a foreign language at the University of Regensburg in 2010. This minor has since turned into my major, leading me into the doctoral program in German at the University of Toronto in 2011. My research focus is on women’s travel literature, with a particular focus on German Orientalism and women’s agency in travel writings about the Middle East in the 19th and 20th centuries. Other research interests include contemporary women’s literature and life writings, and language pedagogy. Outside of my research, I enjoy teaching the German language and culture to learners of all levels, and reading my way through contemporary German literature. Read More »

Ph.D Student Contact maxwenzel.weber@mail.utoronto.ca    Office Hours Fall 2025: Tuesday 2-4pm   Background MA (2024) in German Literature, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin MSt (2022) in Modern Languages (German), University of Oxford BA (2020) in German Philology and Philosophy, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen Research Interests In my MA thesis – “Ich bin schon jetzt nur noch eine dünne Haut…”: Erdsystem und Literatur in Marlen Haushofer’s Die Wand” – I explore the ways in which literature can intertwine with the earthsystem. I conclude that any translation of the earthsystem’s processes into literature remains futile, but nevertheless the translation of the untranslatable becomes necessary both to develop a form of modesty towards our environment and to enable any future engagement between literature and the earthsystem. My current research interests involve the so-called Anthropocene, Gaia-theory, cybernetics and literary imaginations of the future. My research focuses on Tkhines, the intimate Yiddish prayers primarily aimed, written, and performed by women. These texts covered issues of daily life and life cycle events, playing a crucial role in the folk practices of Ashkenazi Jews and offering us critical insight into a worldview defined by shared feeling.
