Ph.D. Candidate Contact info lara.pehar@utoronto.ca Office Hours Fall 2016: Mon 10-12 Background After studying at the University of Toronto and Universität Heidelberg, and obtaining an Hon. BA in Philosophy and a Master of Arts in German literature, culture and theory, I joined the PhD Program at the German department to specialize in literature of German modernism. With support from SSHRC, OGS and JIGES, and generous internal grants, I have returned to Universität Heidelberg to conduct research for my project on desire in Kafka, which is now nearing completion. Keeping with my Kafka-research, I have reviewed several recent books on the author. Beyond my immediate project, I am interested in the culture of remembrance and literary attempts at Vergangenheitsbewältigung, not only in the German context, but also in the aftermath of the Balkan wars half a century later. This fall I am teaching a course on German literature after 1945, entitled “Writing Memory” which chronicles the traumas of forgetting and remembering, and the necessity to write about them.
