Degree Programs & Certificates

Our German undergraduate programs – a major degree in German Studies, three minors (German Studies, Business German, German Studies in English), two Certificates (Global German Studies and German Language) – aim to provide advanced critical literacy in German language, literature, and culture. The program enables students to succeed in a range of academic, scientific, economic, and administrative careers in a globalized world in which German culture plays a significant role.

Major in German Studies (ASMAJ1400)

  • Master oral and written German through a succession of language courses
  • Gain a deeper understanding of German literature, culture, film, thought, and more, covering various geographical, historical, social, and cultural contexts
  • Develop research skills by working with faculty members in their areas of expertise and gain professional opportunities in department

Minor in German Studies (ASMIN1400)

  • Acquire German proficiency to intermediate or higher levels
  • Tailor your studies with flexible topic course options to match your interests

Minor in Business German (ASMIN2453)

  • Develop language skills and cultural knowledge to excel in German business environments, with a focus on work culture, economy, and professional communication
  • Gain practical insights and language proficiency through courses that prepare you for internships and job opportunities in Germany

Minor in German in English (ASMIN1405)

  • Embark on a study of German literature, culture, film, thought, and more without first having to master a foreign language

Certificate in Global German Studies (ASCER1401)

  • Earn a certificate with “UofT Global Scholar” transcript notation while gaining global fluency and basic German language skills through courses on globalization, language, and international experience

Certificate in German Language (ASCER1402)

  • Receive official transcript recognition of your German proficiency with a Certificate in German Language by completing two full credits taught in German.
