Background

Nicola Vöhringer studied Modern German Literature, Medieval German Studies, and Religious Studies at the University of Tübingen and the University of Strasbourg, and received her MA from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. She completed her doctoral work at the University of Toronto in 2017 with a dissertation on the role of sound and acoustic perception in late medieval devotional culture and mysticism.

Focusing on the sensory participation of lay audiences in the medieval mass and the reception of mystical writings in a female monastic context, her research explores questions of premodern medialities, devotional practices, medieval textual aesthetics, and concepts and practices of space and place.

Nicola Vöhringer has taught courses on German language, literature, and culture at the University of Toronto (2009 - 2015), and the National Tajik University and Russian Tajik Slavonic University in Tajikistan (2015 - 2018). Before coming to Toronto in August 2018, she was the director of the DAAD office in Tajikistan from 2015 - 2018.

She holds a joint appointment in the German and History Departments at the University of Toronto and serves as the director of the DAAD Information Centre for Canada which promotes study and research in Germany and provides information about funding opportunities for such activities
